OEM IPS GBC

This was one of my first projects and one that I am very proud of. This mod requires cutting the original shell, but the outcome is quite beautiful if you have a OEM shell in good condition.

The request was to keep as many original parts as possible and give the screen a facelift. A solid choice for this project was the IPS Display linked in the parts section.

You'll need a rotary tool if you want this to go quickly. I tried the method of scoring with a hobby knife and using flush cutters to remove plastic, but wasn't having a lot of luck.

I found a rotary tool for $9.99 at Harbor Freight that was able to do the job.

Go slow and test fit the display every few minutes until you're able to lay the screen down flat.

There's a lot of plastic that needs to be taken away, but you definitely don't want to take too much. If you're not careful you could cut through the shell or cause a stress mark in the plastic shell.

The full story behind this build is a lot longer than this, it had some audio issues which is why you'll see a speaker in the image below. I wasn't able to resolve the audio issue at the time, so I swapped the broken motherboard with them for a working one. I kept the broken device to continue to troubleshoot so they could have a functioning GBC.

This was built for a good friend of mine over at Collector's Den
